The Structural and Visual Anchor of the Balustrade
A newel post anchors the balustrade at the start, end and any change of direction in a staircase, while intermediate posts support the handrail along the run. Because posts carry lateral load from anyone leaning on or gripping the balustrade, they're supplied in heavier section sizes than most other stair components, milled from the same dense hardwood used for stringers. We supply post stock square-dressed on four sides in a range of section sizes, suited to both simple square-post balustrade designs and posts intended for further shaping, turning or chamfering by a joiner. Select-grade material is used throughout, since posts are handled and viewed at close range far more than any other part of the staircase.

Working With Stair Posts
Fix newel posts securely to the stringer, floor structure or landing framing per standard balustrade construction practice — posts need to resist genuine lateral load, so fixing methods should meet the relevant building code balustrade requirements for your project. Pre-drill for bolted connections to avoid splitting heavy-section stock. Sand and finish posts with the same coating system as the treads, risers and handrail for visual consistency across the balustrade. Because posts are handled constantly at the newel and grip points, they tend to show wear on the coating faster than static surfaces, so more frequent spot recoating around handling areas is worth planning for.
