JVS Timber supplies a carefully selected range of premium joinery hardwoods — from pale, contemporary Australian natives such as Blackbutt and the ash-group eucalypts, through richly figured Spotted Gum and characterful Chestnuts, to deep-red Jarrah and the world’s most popular imported joinery timbers, American Oak and American Ash. Every one is chosen to machine cleanly, finish beautifully and perform for decades indoors. Premium Timber for Furniture, Cabinetry and Architectural Joinery
Joinery hardwoods are selected first and foremost for how they look and how they work. Where structural and outdoor timbers are chosen for strength and durability, joinery timbers are prized for clean machining, reliable gluing and screwing, stable behaviour once dried, and the way they take stains, oils and clear coatings. The result is timber that can be shaped into crisp joints, smooth surfaces and refined details, and finished to anything from a pale Scandinavian look to a rich, warm tone. Our range spans the full spectrum of looks. For pale, contemporary work there is Blackbutt, American Ash and Tasmanian Oak; for warm character, Messmate-family Chestnuts; for bold figure and depth, Spotted Gum; for deep red richness, Jarrah; and for the classic, consistent grain that has defined fine furniture for generations, American Oak. Most are best suited to interior joinery, while several of the durable natives can also serve in exterior joinery when properly detailed and finished. Our team can help you match the species to the piece, the look and the budget.

Working With Joinery Hardwood
Each species machines a little differently — the dense natives such as Spotted Gum, Blackbutt and Jarrah benefit from sharp, carbide tooling and pre-drilling, while the imported oak and ash are renowned for easy, clean machining. As a rule, let timber acclimatise to the workshop, work with sharp tooling, pre-drill near ends and edges, and choose adhesives suited to dense or oily species. American Oak reacts with iron, so use non-ferrous or coated fixings to avoid staining. Finishing is where joinery hardwoods shine. Most of our range takes stains, oils and clear coatings evenly, letting you steer the look from pale and natural to rich and warm. For interior joinery, a quality clear or tinted finish protects the surface and showcases the grain; for any exterior joinery using a durable species, use an appropriate exterior coating and maintain it. Always finish all faces and edges to balance moisture movement and keep doors, drawers and panels stable.

Sustainable & Ethically Sourced
JVS Timber sources joinery hardwood from certified producers and supplies product compliant with Australian industry standards. Our native species are renewable and responsibly managed; recycled and salvaged options, such as much of today’s Jarrah, add a further sustainable choice; and our imported American Oak and Ash are drawn from vast, expanding, sustainably managed North American hardwood forests. Choosing quality timber for pieces built to last is itself a sustainable decision. FSC-certified options are available on request.

Joinery Hardwood — Frequently Asked Questions
The imported species — American Oak and American Ash — are renowned for clean, easy machining and finishing, which is part of why they are so popular for furniture and cabinetry. Among the natives, Tasmanian Oak is very workable, while the dense species (Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Jarrah) are harder on tooling and benefit from pre-drilling and sharp, carbide blades.
DAR (dressed all round) timber is planed smooth on all four faces to a consistent finished size, ready for joinery. Sawn timber is supplied as cut from the log, giving you maximum material to dress and shape yourself. We supply both, depending on your workshop setup and project.
Most are best for interior joinery. The durable natives — such as Blackbutt, Spotted Gum and Jarrah — can be used in exterior joinery when properly detailed, coated and maintained, while the lower-durability species (the Chestnuts, Tasmanian Oak, American Ash) should be kept indoors. American Oak heartwood is durable but still benefits from protection outdoors.
Tasmanian Oak and American Ash are especially prized for taking stains and clear finishes evenly, making them ideal when you want to tint to a specific colour. American Oak’s open grain also accepts finishes beautifully and highlights its figure. Our team can advise on the best species for your intended finish.

Yes. Many of our joinery hardwoods are well suited to stairs and benchtops — for example Tasmanian Oak and American Oak for stairs, and Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Jarrah and the Chestnuts for solid-timber benchtops. We can supply appropriate sections, profiles and staircase components, and advise on the best species for the wear and look you need.
