Economical, Blonde and Stable — for Interiors
Malaysian Oak is a trade name for plantation-grown rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis) — the timber of the rubber tree, harvested after it has finished producing latex (usually around 25 years). Despite the name, it is not a true oak. The timber is pale — whitish-yellow when fresh, seasoning to cream, straw or light brown often with a pinkish tinge — with a straight to shallowly interlocked grain and a moderately coarse, even texture. As interior screening, its blonde, even tone gives a light, contemporary look and a clean canvas for paint or stain. Malaysian Oak is a moderately hard, medium-density hardwood that is dimensionally stable (minimal shrinkage) and takes stains and finishes uniformly, making it easy to work and finish. Its natural durability is low, however, so it is an interior screening timber — ideal for room dividers and decorative partitions, but not for exposed outdoor use. It is often supplied finger-jointed and in shorter board lengths, and primed options are available. Being a plantation by-product, it is also an environmentally friendly, economical choice.

Why Choose Malaysian Oak Screening
Economical and Great Value
As a plantation by-product, Malaysian Oak is one of the most affordable solid hardwoods available — ideal for interior screens and dividers on a budget.
Blonde, Contemporary Look
Its pale, even cream-to-light-brown tone gives a light, contemporary look and a clean canvas that takes paint or stain beautifully.
Dimensionally Stable
With minimal shrinkage, Malaysian Oak is a stable timber that keeps battens straight and true — helpful for the crisp lines of an interior screen.
Easy to Work and Finish
It machines and sands readily and takes stains and finishes uniformly, making it simple to fabricate and finish a neat, even screen.
Environmentally Friendly
Harvested after the rubber tree’s latex-producing life, Malaysian Oak makes productive use of a plantation by-product — a responsible, eco-friendly choice.
Versatile for Interiors
From room dividers to decorative partitions and feature screens, Malaysian Oak is a flexible, affordable interior screening option.

Malaysian Oak Screening Profiles & Spacing
Malaysian Oak screening is supplied as battens and slats in a choice of square and rectangular sections. The section size and the spacing you set between battens together determine how the finished screen looks and performs: narrower battens with tight gaps read as fine and private, while wider battens or generous gaps feel bold, open and airy. As a guide, closer spacing increases privacy and shade but reduces airflow and light, so it pays to set out a sample bay or mock-up to confirm the look before committing to the full run. Malaysian Oak’s pale, even tone and stability make it well suited to neat, uniform interior battens, and because it takes paint and stain so evenly it is an easy choice when you want the screen finished in a specific colour. Whatever profile and spacing you choose, fixing the battens to a sound, well-set-out frame is the key to a crisp, professional result. Our team can talk through batten sizes, spacings and frame options and help you order the right quantity with minimal waste. It is also worth thinking about orientation and viewing angle when you design a Malaysian Oak screen. Vertical battens tend to draw the eye upward and suit boundary and privacy screens, while horizontal battens give a low, contemporary, streamlined look; the angle a screen is viewed from changes how open or private it appears, so a screen that looks airy head-on can read as near-solid from an angle. For privacy screens in particular, we recommend building a small sample bay and checking it from the key sightlines — from a neighbour’s window, a deck or the street — before locking in the final batten size and spacing. A little planning here makes the difference between a screen that merely looks good and one that does exactly the job you need.

Working With and Maintaining Malaysian Oak
Malaysian Oak machines and sands readily and fixes with standard practice; it may split when nailed, so pre-drill near ends and use appropriate fixings or adhesives. Fix battens to a sound interior frame with consistent gaps. Because it is often supplied finger-jointed and in shorter lengths, plan the layout to suit the available stock. Finish Malaysian Oak with a quality interior paint, stain or clear coating — its uniform grain takes finishes evenly for a neat result, and primed stock is paint-ready. Because its natural durability is low, keep Malaysian Oak screening for interior, dry locations away from the weather; for any outdoor screen, choose a durable species such as Blackbutt, Spotted Gum or Ironbark.
