A Light, Durable, Great-Value Coast-Ash Hardwood
Southern Ash is a southern coast-ash eucalypt — part of the group centred on Silvertop Ash (Eucalyptus sieberi), also known as Coast Ash — that grows along the southern and central coast and tablelands of New South Wales, eastern Victoria and north-eastern Tasmania. Its heartwood is a light honey to warm nut-brown, sometimes with a pinkish tinge, with a narrow, barely distinct sapwood. A medium texture, an often interlocked grain, visible growth rings and natural features such as gum veins, pencil streaks and pinhole-borer markings give Southern Ash its characterful, organic appearance. Southern Ash is a moderately durable hardwood, rated around Durability Class 2 above ground (an expected service life of roughly 15 to 40 years exposed), and it is one of the recognised bushfire-resisting timbers, commonly suitable for use up to BAL-29 under AS 3959 where board thickness and detailing meet the standard. It takes oils and coatings well and is relatively easy to work, making it a practical and popular cladding choice. As with related ash species, exact botanical source and figures should be confirmed for your order.

Why Choose Southern Ash Cladding
Light, Warm Tones
Southern Ash offers light honey to nut-brown colouring with occasional pink tints — a fresh, warm, contemporary palette that suits coastal and modern architecture and pairs well with light colour schemes.
Class 2 Durability
Rated around Durability Class 2 above ground, Southern Ash is well suited to external cladding, typically offering decades of service when properly detailed, coated and maintained.
BAL-29 Bushfire Capability
Southern Ash is among the recognised bushfire-resisting timbers and is commonly suitable for use up to BAL-29, making it a practical option for cladding on many bushfire-prone sites (confirm per AS 3959).
Natural Character
Gum veins, pencil streaks and pinhole-borer markings give Southern Ash a genuine, organic look — a point of difference for owners who want authentic timber character.
Great Value
Southern Ash delivers genuine hardwood durability and bushfire capability at a more accessible price than the densest premium species, making it ideal for larger facades and budget-conscious projects.
Easy to Work and Finish
Relatively straightforward to handle and fix, Southern Ash takes oils and coatings beautifully, helping achieve a quality finish with sensible effort.

Southern Ash Cladding Profiles & Grades
Southern Ash cladding can be supplied in a choice of popular profiles to suit the look you are after — from crisp shiplap and tongue-and-groove boards that create clean, contemporary shadowlines, through splayed weatherboard and board-on-board profiles for a more traditional feel, to square-edge and channel profiles for a modern, linear aesthetic. Cover width has a big impact on the finished look: narrower boards read as fine and detailed, while wider boards give a bolder, more streamlined facade. Our team can talk through the options and help you choose the profile and width that best suit your design and budget. Grade is the other key choice. Cleaner, lower-feature grades give a calm, uniform appearance, while character or feature grades showcase the natural colour variation, grain and markings that make Southern Ash distinctive. Because timber is a natural product, every board is unique, so we recommend reviewing a current sample or batch before committing to a large order. Tell us the profile, width and grade you are leaning towards and we will confirm what is available and provide samples where possible.

Working With and Maintaining Southern Ash
Southern Ash is relatively easy to work; fix cladding with standard cavity practice over battens with a drained, ventilated cavity, use quality fixings (stainless steel near the coast) and pre-drill near board ends. Detail the work to shed water and seal cut ends. Where a bushfire rating applies, follow AS 3959 requirements for the relevant BAL, including minimum board thickness. The species can be prone to surface checking, so allow it to acclimatise and finish promptly. To maintain Southern Ash’s light tones, apply a quality exterior oil or coating after installation and re-apply periodically depending on exposure; left uncoated it weathers to a silver-grey. Because the species carries natural gum veins and surface features, select faces during installation for the look you want. Reseal cut ends and maintain the finish to maximise service life.
