Stair Stringers
Stringers are the part of the staircase nobody sees once it's built and finished — which is exactly why they need to be right. As the structural side members carrying every tread, riser and footstep on the flight, stringers demand denser, higher-grade hardwood than almost any other component in the staircase. JVS Timber supplies structural-grade Blackbutt and Spotted Gum stringer stock to Melbourne builders and joineries. Because a stringer failure isn't a cosmetic problem, we hold stringer stock to tighter grading than decorative timber — straight grain, minimal defects, and dimensions confirmed against the span and load the staircase will carry. The Structural Backbone of Every Staircase
A stringer is the raked board that runs the full length of the staircase and carries the housed or cleated treads and risers fixed into it. Because it's load-bearing rather than purely decorative, stringer stock is selected for straightness of grain and structural integrity ahead of surface appearance, though it's still supplied in Blackbutt or Spotted Gum so any exposed sections match the rest of the staircase. Stringers are supplied dressed and sized ready for housing, cutting or routing on site, in section sizes suited to standard domestic spans through to larger commercial staircases. Where a staircase design leaves the stringer visible — open-string construction, for example — we can supply select-grade stock with a cleaner face for the exposed side.

Why Choose JVS Stringers
Structural-Grade Selection
Stringer stock is graded for straightness and structural soundness first, so the staircase carries load reliably over decades of use, not just years.
Heavy Section Sizes
Supplied in section depths suited to the span and load of your staircase, from standard domestic runs through to heavier commercial specifications.
Species-Matched Where Visible
Open-string and feature staircases can be specified in select-grade Blackbutt or Spotted Gum so the exposed stringer face matches the treads and flooring.
Consistent Trade Supply
We hold regular stock of common stringer sizes for Melbourne builders and can confirm project-specific runs with realistic lead times.
Ready for On-Site Fabrication
Dressed and sized stock is ready for housing, cutting and routing by your joiner without additional dimensioning work.

Where Stair Stringers Perform Best
Closed-string residential staircases where the stringer sits behind the treads.
Open-string staircases where the stringer face is visible and needs to match the timber floor.
Commercial and multi-residential staircases requiring heavier structural sections.
Renovation projects replacing existing stringers with species-matched hardwood.
Custom joinery staircases built off-site and installed as a complete unit.
Working With Stair Stringers
Stringer housings for treads and risers should be routed or cut to the depth and angle specified in your staircase design, with fixings and glue blocks used per standard construction practice to eliminate movement and squeaking over time. Pre-drill for any bolted or screwed connections near the ends of the board. Where stringers are exposed — open-string designs, for example — finish them with the same coating system used on the treads and flooring so colour and sheen stay consistent across the whole staircase. Hidden stringers in closed-string construction generally don't need a decorative finish, though sealing cut ends is still good practice to limit moisture movement.

Stair Stringers — Frequently Asked Questions
Section size depends on the span between supports, the number of treads carried, and whether the design is open or closed string. We'll confirm the right depth and thickness once we know your staircase span and rise — for anything non-standard, we recommend checking the section against your builder or engineer's specification.
Yes, in open-string designs the stringer face is visible and forms part of the finished look. Specify select-grade stock for these applications so the exposed face has a cleaner appearance than standard structural-grade stringer timber.
Only where they're visible. In a standard closed-string staircase the stringer sits behind the treads and isn't seen, so species matching matters less. For open-string or feature staircases, we recommend ordering stringers in the same species as your treads and flooring.
Both are supplied in the same core species, but stringer stock is graded primarily for structural straightness and soundness rather than surface appearance, since most of the board is concealed or subject to routing and housing work. Stringers carry the whole staircase, so it's worth confirming section sizing against your specific design before ordering rather than assuming a standard size will do. Send through your drawings and we'll help you get the specification right.
