JVS TIMBER — Hardwood Posts & Fence Posts

Hardwood Posts & Fence Posts

When a post has to carry load, survive years in the ground and still look the part, Australian hardwood is the benchmark. JVS Timber supplies two proven post ranges: dense, feature-worthy Hardwood Posts in Spotted Gum and ironbark for verandahs, decks, pergolas and structural work, and Class 1 durable Mixed Reds Fence Posts engineered for decades of in-ground service. Both are cut from naturally durable eucalypts that resist termites and decay without chemical treatment. We stock both ranges in a full range of standard square sections and lengths in Melbourne, available for immediate collection or delivery across Victoria and Australia-wide. Whether you are setting a rural boundary, footing a driveway gate or specifying a dressed feature post, our team will confirm the right species, size, durability class and finish for your job — with a free, no-obligation quote.

ABOUT HARDWOOD POSTS & FENCE POSTS

Naturally Durable Australian Hardwood Posts

Both ranges draw on the same core strength of Australian hardwood: dense heartwood that delivers high load capacity, natural termite and decay resistance, and outstanding fixing hold — all without preservatives. The difference is the job. Hardwood Posts (Spotted Gum, ironbark) are chosen where strength meets appearance — dressed and oiled for verandah, deck, pergola and feature posts, or stress-graded for structural loads. Mixed Reds Fence Posts are a blended group of red-toned durable eucalypts — Red Ironbark, Red Mahogany, Grey Ironbark and related species — milled specifically for in-ground fencing. Durability class is the critical spec for any post, and it's set by AS 5604 (Timber — Natural Durability Ratings). Class 1 is the highest rating: 25+ years in ground contact and 40+ years above ground. Mixed Reds carry Class 1 in-ground durability, while the feature hardwoods deliver Class 1 above-ground looks and performance, with the most durable species suited to in-ground use too. Tell us where the post is going and our team will match the range to your application.

WHY CHOOSE JVS

Why Choose Hardwood Posts & Fence Posts from JVS Timber

Class 1 Natural Durability

The highest AS 5604 rating — 25+ years in-ground and 40+ years above ground — achieved naturally through dense heartwood, no chemical treatment required.

Naturally Termite Resistant

Dense Australian hardwood resists subterranean termite attack and decay by nature — a critical advantage in Melbourne's outer-suburban and rural fencing contexts.

Two Ranges, One Supplier

Feature-grade Spotted Gum and ironbark posts for the look, and Mixed Reds fence posts for the ground — specify the right post for every part of the job from one source.

Exceptional Density & Fixing Hold

High density resists splitting, mechanical damage and surface wear, and holds nails, screws and coach bolts securely over decades of wire and rail loading.

Bushfire Capable

Dense species like Spotted Gum and ironbark are commonly BAL-29 capable, suiting many bushfire-prone sites (confirm species per AS 3959).

Delivered Australia-Wide

From a single dressed feature post to bulk fence posts for a kilometre of rural boundary, we confirm stock, sizes and competitive trade pricing, delivered Australia-wide.

INSTALLATION & CARE

Installing and Maintaining Hardwood Posts & Fence Posts

Hardwood is dense, so pre-drill for all fixings and use hot-dipped galvanised or stainless steel fixings throughout — hardwood tannins accelerate corrosion of bare or zinc-plated steel, causing fastener failure and timber staining. For above-ground posts, fix to footings with galvanised or stainless stirrups to keep the base off the ground and dry. For in-ground posts, use a Class 1 durable species, compact granular backfill in layers, or for gate, corner and structural posts, dome the concrete collar at the surface to shed water away from the ground line where decay risk is highest. For load-bearing posts, size and fix in accordance with the relevant standards and a project engineer where required. To preserve the colour of dressed feature posts, finish with a quality exterior oil and re-apply periodically; left uncoated, durable hardwood weathers to a silver-grey while keeping its strength. Always seal cut ends, especially on weather-exposed or in-ground posts.

DURABILITY & STANDARDS

Hardwood Posts & Fence Posts Durability & Standards

Durability class is the most important spec for a post, and it depends on placement. For above-ground posts — verandah, deck and pergola posts on stirrups — a Class 1 or 2 durable hardwood performs for decades. For in-ground posts the requirement is stricter: specify a Class 1 in-ground species such as ironbark or Mixed Reds, or an appropriately H4/H5-treated post if a less durable species is used, since constant ground contact is the most demanding exposure. Many dense post species are also BAL-29 capable, suiting bushfire-prone areas, but this depends on the species supplied — always confirm species and its durability and bushfire ratings against AS 5604 and AS 3959 for your application. Our team can advise on the right species and finish for above-ground or in-ground use.
