Stair Treads
The tread is the part of a staircase that actually does the work — every footstep, every dropped toolbox, every dog running up and down lands on it. JVS Timber supplies hardwood stair treads milled from Blackbutt and Spotted Gum, dressed thick enough to handle structural spans and finished with a nosing profile that stays grippy under daily traffic. Treads are typically the first stair component a builder orders once flooring is locked in, since matching the tread species to the adjoining floor is what makes a staircase look like it was designed rather than assembled from whatever was on the shelf. A Structural Surface, Not Just a Step
A stair tread carries point loads well beyond what a normal floorboard sees, which is why we mill ours from dense, Class 1 or Class 2 durability hardwood rather than lighter decorative species. Blackbutt gives a pale honey tone with a fine, even grain; Spotted Gum runs from pale brown through to rich chocolate with a distinctive wavy figure. Both machine cleanly to a nosing profile and take stain or clear coating without blotching. Standard tread stock is supplied dressed on four sides with a pencil-round or bullnose nosing along the leading edge, ready for the stringer housings and riser rebates to be cut on site or in the joinery shop. Thicker sections are available where open-riser or floating-stair designs put more of the load through the tread alone.

Why Choose JVS Treads
Species-Matched to Your Floor
Order treads in the same Blackbutt or Spotted Gum grade as your flooring so the staircase runs as one continuous timber, not a visible transition.
Non-Slip Nosing Profile
A rounded or bullnosed nosing edge keeps the tread comfortable and slip-safe underfoot while giving a clean, finished line to each step.
Built for Heavy Foot Traffic
Milled from Janka 8–9 kN hardwood, our treads shrug off the daily wear of a busy household or commercial stairwell without denting or splintering.
Dressed and Ready to Fit
Four-side dressed stock arrives close to finished dimension, reducing on-site machining time before housing and fixing.
Consistent Grain and Colour Runs
We select and grade tread stock to keep colour and grain reasonably consistent across a full flight, so the staircase reads as a single job rather than a mixed batch.

Where Stair Treads Perform Best
Residential internal staircases in new builds and renovations.
Feature and architect-specified staircases matched to hardwood flooring.
Commercial and hospitality staircases requiring durable, presentable treads.
Open-riser and floating-stair designs where the tread carries more visible load.
Joinery workshops fabricating staircases for multiple residential sites.
Working With Stair Treads
Treads should be housed into stringers or supported on cleats per standard staircase construction practice, with fixings concealed from the walking surface wherever possible. Pre-drill for any exposed screw fixing to avoid splitting near the nosing, and allow for natural movement across the width of the board. Once fitted, treads are typically sanded flush and finished with a floor-grade coating that matches the adjoining flooring — a hardwearing polyurethane or oil, applied in the same number of coats as the floor for a consistent sheen. Re-coat high-traffic treads more frequently than the surrounding floor, since stair nosings wear faster than open floor area.

Stair Treads — Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — this is the most common reason builders order treads from us specifically. If your flooring is Blackbutt or Spotted Gum, we can supply treads from the same species and grade so the staircase transitions cleanly from the floor without an obvious colour or grain break.
Standard treads run 32–42 mm depending on span and design. Enclosed staircases with full stringer support generally need less thickness than open-riser or floating designs where the tread bears more of the load unsupported. Confirm your specific span with your builder or engineer before ordering.
We can supply treads with a pencil-round or bullnose nosing profile pre-machined, or as dressed square-edge stock for your joiner to profile on site — let us know which you need when you order.
Treads see concentrated point-load traffic on a narrow nosing edge, so they wear faster than open floor area even in the same species. A Janka 8–9 kN hardwood tread will still significantly outlast a softer timber, but expect to recoat the nosing more often than the main floor. Treads set the tone for the whole staircase, so getting the species, thickness and nosing profile right at the ordering stage saves rework later. If you're unsure what you need, send through your staircase drawings and our team will talk you through the right specification.
