Elegant, Pale and Beautifully Finished — for Interiors
Tasmanian Oak is a trade name for three closely related eucalypts — Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans), Alpine Ash (Eucalyptus delegatensis) and Messmate (Eucalyptus obliqua) — grown in south-eastern Australia and marketed together. Despite the name it has no relation to true (Quercus) oak; the name reflects its pale colour and clean grain. The timber ranges from pale straw to light reddish-brown with cream and pink shades, an open to moderately open texture and a generally straight grain, giving interior screens a clean, refined, contemporary look. Tasmanian Oak is medium in density, with a Janka hardness around 4.9 to 5.5 kN, and is renowned for taking stains and finishes evenly and for its minimal movement once seasoned. Its natural durability is low, however, so it is an interior screening timber — perfect for room dividers and decorative feature screens, but not for exposed outdoor use. It is lyctid-susceptible and should be treated where required.

Tasmanian Oak Screening Profiles & Spacing
Tasmanian Oak screening is supplied as battens and slats in a choice of square and rectangular sections. The section size and the spacing you set between battens together determine how the finished screen looks and performs: narrower battens with tight gaps read as fine and private, while wider battens or generous gaps feel bold, open and airy. As a guide, closer spacing increases privacy and shade but reduces airflow and light, so it pays to set out a sample bay or mock-up to confirm the look before committing to the full run. Tasmanian Oak’s pale, even tone and clean grain make it ideal for fine, closely-set interior battens where crisp, uniform lines and a refined finish are the goal. Whatever profile and spacing you choose, fixing the battens to a sound, well-set-out frame is the key to a crisp, professional result. Our team can talk through batten sizes, spacings and frame options and help you order the right quantity with minimal waste. It is also worth thinking about orientation and viewing angle when you design a Tasmanian Oak screen. Vertical battens tend to draw the eye upward and suit boundary and privacy screens, while horizontal battens give a low, contemporary, streamlined look; the angle a screen is viewed from changes how open or private it appears, so a screen that looks airy head-on can read as near-solid from an angle. For privacy screens in particular, we recommend building a small sample bay and checking it from the key sightlines — from a neighbour’s window, a deck or the street — before locking in the final batten size and spacing. A little planning here makes the difference between a screen that merely looks good and one that does exactly the job you need.

Working With and Maintaining Tasmanian Oak
Tasmanian Oak is easy to work with standard practice; it machines, glues and fixes well, making it ideal for precise interior screens and dividers. Fix battens to a sound interior frame with consistent gaps and finish with a quality interior coating or stain — its excellent staining qualities let you achieve almost any tone evenly. Because its natural durability is low, Tasmanian Oak should be kept for interior screening and decorative use, away from the weather. Treat for lyctid borer where required and finish all faces to balance moisture movement and keep battens straight. For any outdoor screen, choose a durable species such as Blackbutt, Spotted Gum or Ironbark instead.
