ABOUT BLACKBUTT

Pale, Clean and Durable Outdoors

Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis) grows along the coastal forests of New South Wales and southern Queensland. Its heartwood ranges from golden yellow to pale brown, sometimes with a subtle pink tinge, with a generally straight grain, even texture and the occasional small gum vein. As screening, that pale, uniform appearance gives a clean, light, contemporary look that is a favourite for modern outdoor spaces. Blackbutt is dense and durable, with a Janka hardness around 9.0 to 9.1 kN and a density near 900 kg/m³. It is rated Class 1 for above-ground durability, is naturally termite resistant thanks to its dense heartwood, and is one of the seven recognised bushfire-resisting timbers, commonly approved for use up to BAL-29. Helpfully, its heartwood is not susceptible to lyctid borer — an advantage for long-lasting outdoor screens.

Key Highlights

Why Choose Blackbutt Screening

Pale, Contemporary Look

Blackbutt’s golden-to-pale-brown colour and straight grain give a clean, light, modern screen that suits coastal and contemporary architecture and complements many materials and colour schemes.

Class 1 Durability

Rated Durability Class 1 above ground, Blackbutt’s decay-resistant heartwood performs reliably as an outdoor screen for decades with appropriate care.

BAL-29 Bushfire Performance

One of seven recognised bushfire-resisting timbers, Blackbutt is commonly approved for use up to BAL-29, suiting it to screening in bushfire-prone areas (confirm per site).

Naturally Termite Resistant

Blackbutt’s dense heartwood is naturally termite resistant and, unlike some hardwoods, not susceptible to lyctid borer — a real advantage outdoors.

Hard and Hard-Wearing

With a Janka hardness around 9 kN, Blackbutt resists knocks and wear, helping a screen keep its appearance over time.

Versatile and Popular

A readily available, well-loved hardwood, Blackbutt suits everything from fine contemporary screens to robust feature fences.

PROFILES & SPACING

Blackbutt Screening Profiles & Spacing

Blackbutt screening is supplied as battens and slats in a choice of square and rectangular sections. The section size and the spacing you set between battens together determine how the finished screen looks and performs: narrower battens with tight gaps read as fine and private, while wider battens or generous gaps feel bold, open and airy. As a guide, closer spacing increases privacy and shade but reduces airflow and light, so it pays to set out a sample bay or mock-up to confirm the look before committing to the full run. Blackbutt’s pale, uniform tone makes it especially suited to crisp, contemporary screens where you want a clean, even look across the whole run, and it takes a light or tinted finish beautifully. Whatever profile and spacing you choose, fixing the battens to a sound, well-set-out frame is the key to a crisp, professional result. Our team can talk through batten sizes, spacings and frame options and help you order the right quantity with minimal waste. It is also worth thinking about orientation and viewing angle when you design a Blackbutt screen. Vertical battens tend to draw the eye upward and suit boundary and privacy screens, while horizontal battens give a low, contemporary, streamlined look; the angle a screen is viewed from changes how open or private it appears, so a screen that looks airy head-on can read as near-solid from an angle. For privacy screens in particular, we recommend building a small sample bay and checking it from the key sightlines — from a neighbour’s window, a deck or the street — before locking in the final batten size and spacing. A little planning here makes the difference between a screen that merely looks good and one that does exactly the job you need.

INSTALLATION & CARE

Working With and Maintaining Blackbutt

Blackbutt is dense, so pre-drill near batten ends to prevent splitting and use quality fixings — stainless steel near the coast. Fix battens to a sound, well-set-out frame or posts with consistent gaps, allow for natural movement and seal cut ends. Where the screen forms part of a bushfire-rated assembly or balustrade, confirm the relevant detailing. To keep Blackbutt’s pale tones, finish the screen with a quality exterior oil or coating and re-apply periodically according to exposure. Left uncoated, it weathers to an attractive silver-grey while retaining its durability. Because the heartwood is naturally durable, no chemical treatment is needed for above-ground screening, though good detailing extends service life.
