JVS TIMBER — Ironbark Screening

Ironbark Screening

When a screen has to stand up to relentless sun, weather and decades of outdoor life, few timbers come close to Ironbark. Supplied by JVS Timber, Ironbark screening is drawn from one of the hardest and most durable hardwoods on the planet — a dense, deep-red eucalypt rated Class 1 for durability, naturally resistant to termites and decay, and approved for bushfire-prone areas. For privacy screens, batten walls and feature fences built to last a lifetime, Ironbark is in a class of its own. Whether you are screening a boundary, a courtyard, a pool area or a striking feature wall, Ironbark delivers unmatched strength, longevity and rich red colour. ABOUT IRONBARK

Australia’s Hardest Hardwood, Built to Last Outdoors

Ironbark (Eucalyptus sideroxylon and related Red Ironbark species) grows across eastern and southern Australia and takes its name from the thick, dark, deeply furrowed bark that protects the tree. The heartwood ranges from deep red to dark red-brown, occasionally almost chocolate, contrasting with a paler sapwood, with an interlocked grain and a moderately coarse, even texture. As screening, that rich colour and dense grain make a bold, premium statement that weathers handsomely over time. What sets Ironbark apart is its sheer density — around 1,120 kg/m³, among the heaviest commercial timbers in Australia — which translates directly into performance: a Class 1 durability rating (the highest), a Janka hardness around 14 kN, natural termite and decay resistance, and approval for use up to BAL-29 in bushfire-prone areas. For an outdoor screen that needs to perform for decades with minimal fuss, Ironbark is the benchmark. The sapwood is lyctid-susceptible, so heartwood should be specified.

Key Highlights

Why Choose Ironbark Screening

Class 1 Durability — the Highest Rating

Ironbark is rated Durability Class 1 above ground, the top tier on the AS 5604 scale, with naturally decay-resistant heartwood that lets an outdoor screen perform for decades with minimal maintenance.

Exceptional Hardness

With a Janka hardness around 14 kN, Ironbark sits at the very top of the timber hardness scale, shrugging off knocks and wear — ideal for robust, long-lived screens and fences.

Naturally Termite Resistant

Ironbark is among the most termite- and decay-resistant timbers in Australia, performing reliably outdoors without chemical treatment for above-ground screening.

BAL-29 Bushfire Performance

Ironbark is a recognised bushfire-resisting timber and is commonly approved for use up to BAL-29, making it a sensible specification for screens in bushfire-prone areas (confirm per AS 3959).

Rich, Distinctive Colour

Deep reds, red-browns and chocolate tones with interlocked grain give Ironbark screening a bold, premium look that makes a genuine statement and weathers gracefully.

Long-Term Value

Premium up front, Ironbark’s longevity and minimal maintenance make it cost-effective over the life of a screen — you build it once.

PROFILES & SPACING

Ironbark Screening Profiles & Spacing

Ironbark screening is supplied as battens and slats in a choice of square and rectangular sections. The section size and the spacing you set between battens together determine how the finished screen looks and performs: narrower battens with tight gaps read as fine and private, while wider battens or generous gaps feel bold, open and airy. As a guide, closer spacing increases privacy and shade but reduces airflow and light, so it pays to set out a sample bay or mock-up to confirm the look before committing to the full run. Because Ironbark is so dense and rich in colour, even relatively fine battens make a substantial, premium-looking screen, and the deep red tones look striking against render, masonry and greenery. Whatever profile and spacing you choose, fixing the battens to a sound, well-set-out frame is the key to a crisp, professional result. Our team can talk through batten sizes, spacings and frame options and help you order the right quantity with minimal waste. It is also worth thinking about orientation and viewing angle when you design a Ironbark screen. Vertical battens tend to draw the eye upward and suit boundary and privacy screens, while horizontal battens give a low, contemporary, streamlined look; the angle a screen is viewed from changes how open or private it appears, so a screen that looks airy head-on can read as near-solid from an angle. For privacy screens in particular, we recommend building a small sample bay and checking it from the key sightlines — from a neighbour’s window, a deck or the street — before locking in the final batten size and spacing. A little planning here makes the difference between a screen that merely looks good and one that does exactly the job you need.

INSTALLATION & CARE

Working With and Maintaining Ironbark

Ironbark is extremely dense, so pre-drill every fixing to prevent splitting and use high-quality stainless steel screws (304 or 316 grade near the coast) that can handle the timber’s density and resist corrosion; keep tooling sharp. Fix battens to a sound, well-set-out frame or posts with consistent gaps, allow for natural movement, and seal cut ends. Where the screen forms part of a bushfire-rated assembly or balustrade, confirm the relevant detailing. Maintenance is refreshingly low. Left uncoated, Ironbark weathers to an attractive silver-grey while retaining its strength. To keep the rich red tones, clean the screen periodically and apply a quality exterior decking-grade oil once or twice a year depending on exposure. Because the heartwood is so naturally durable, no chemical treatment is required for above-ground screening, though sealing exposed end-grain is good practice.
