JVS TIMBER — Ash Joinery Hardwood

Ash Joinery Hardwood

Ash is one of the world’s great joinery and furniture timbers — a pale, blonde hardwood with a bold, flowing grain, outstanding workability and famous shock resistance. Supplied by JVS Timber, our Ash is American Ash (Fraxinus americana, also called White Ash), the species most commonly sold simply as 'Ash' in Australian joinery supply and the natural companion to American Oak. Light, clean and beautifully consistent, it is a favourite for furniture, cabinetry, doors and mouldings. Whether you are crafting contemporary furniture, a run of cabinetry, doors or fine mouldings, Ash offers a bright, modern look and a timber that is a pleasure to work. ABOUT ASH

Pale, Bold-Grained and a Joy to Work

American Ash (Fraxinus americana) is a North American hardwood with very pale, near-white sapwood and a heartwood that ranges from light cream and straw to a greyish or pale yellow-brown, sometimes with soft undertones, darkening gently over time. It is generally straight-grained with a coarse, uniform texture and a bold 'cathedral' grain and clear growth rings reminiscent of oak — but without oak’s large rays — giving a clean yet characterful look that brightens any interior. Ash is a medium-hard hardwood, with a Janka hardness around 5.9 to 6.0 kN and a density near 670 to 675 kg/m³, and is renowned for its elasticity and shock resistance (it is the timber of choice for tool handles and sports gear). It machines, glues and screws well and takes oils and stains evenly, letting you steer the look from pale Scandinavian to warm honey tones. It is non-durable and lyctid-susceptible, so it is an interior joinery timber.

Key Highlights

Why Choose Ash Joinery Hardwood

Bright, Blonde Appearance

Ash’s pale cream-to-straw colour and bold cathedral grain give furniture and joinery a fresh, light, contemporary look that lifts an interior.

Outstanding Workability

Ash machines, glues, screws and finishes beautifully — one of the most cooperative joinery hardwoods, allowing crisp joints and smooth surfaces with ease.

Famous Shock Resistance

Ash’s elasticity and resistance to shock (the reason it is used for tool handles and sports equipment) make it tough and resilient in everyday furniture and seating.

Takes Finishes Evenly

Its open, uniform grain accepts oils and stains evenly, letting you tune the look from pale and natural to richer honey tones.

Consistent and Available

Imported in good, well-graded supply, Ash offers reliable colour and grain for furniture and volume joinery, with fewer grade surprises.

Versatile Interior Timber

From seating and tables to cabinetry, doors, mouldings and panelling, Ash is a flexible, attractive choice across interior joinery.

GRADES & SELECTION

Grades, Selection & Movement

Ash can be supplied in different grades to suit the look you are after — cleaner, lower-feature selections for a calm, uniform appearance, or character grades that showcase the natural colour variation, grain and markings that make the timber distinctive. Because timber is a natural product, every board is unique, so for visible work it pays to lay boards out and select and arrange them for colour and grain before machining, composing the piece so that tops, doors and panels read the way you intend. We can supply to your preferred grade and, where possible, provide a sample so you know what to expect. Timber movement is the other key consideration in joinery. Ash should be allowed to acclimatise to the conditions of the room or workshop where it will live before it is machined and assembled, so that it reaches a stable moisture content first. Design and detail joints, frames and panels to accommodate the small seasonal movement that all solid timber undergoes, and finish all faces and edges — including undersides and backs — so moisture is taken up and released evenly and components stay flat and true. These simple habits are the difference between joinery that lasts and joinery that twists or splits. Finally, store and handle Ash well before and during the build. Keep boards flat, evenly supported and off the floor in a dry, well-ventilated space out of direct sun, and protect machined components and finished surfaces from knocks and moisture until installation. A little care in storage keeps the timber straight and the finished joinery looking its best.

WORKING & FINISHING

Working With and Finishing Ash

Ash is one of the easiest joinery hardwoods to work — it machines, glues, nails and screws well and routes crisply for profile detail. Let it acclimatise, work with sharp tooling and take advantage of its excellent steam-bending and shaping qualities. As it is non-durable and lyctid-susceptible, keep it to interior applications and treat where required. Ash finishes beautifully, its open, uniform grain taking oils and stains evenly so you can steer the look from pale Scandinavian to warm honey tones; end grain takes a high polish with patient sanding. Finish all faces and edges to balance moisture movement and keep furniture and panels stable, and oil or recoat periodically in high-use settings such as kitchens.
