Blackbutt Joinery Hardwood
For pale, clean, contemporary joinery that is also genuinely hard-wearing, Blackbutt is a standout. Supplied by JVS Timber, Blackbutt is one of Australia’s favourite hardwoods — a golden-to-pale-brown eucalypt with a straight, even grain that gives furniture, cabinetry, benchtops and stairs a crisp, light, modern look. Behind that clean appearance sits a dense, hard timber that resists knocks and wear, making it as practical as it is good-looking. Whether you are crafting a dining table, a run of kitchen cabinetry, a staircase or a set of doors, Blackbutt delivers a light, contemporary aesthetic with real durability. Pale, Clean and Hard-Wearing
Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis) grows along the coastal forests of New South Wales and southern Queensland. Its heartwood ranges from golden yellow to pale brown, sometimes with a subtle pinkish tinge, with a generally straight grain, even texture and the occasional small gum vein. That pale, uniform appearance makes Blackbutt a natural fit for the light, neutral palettes favoured in contemporary interiors and a clean canvas that pairs beautifully with both painted and natural finishes. Blackbutt is dense and hard, with a Janka hardness around 9.0 to 9.1 kN and a density near 900 kg/m³. For joinery that means excellent resistance to dents and surface wear — valuable for benchtops, tabletops and stair treads — along with good stability once seasoned. It machines and finishes well, though its hardness means pre-drilling and sharp tooling pay off. Helpfully, its heartwood is not susceptible to lyctid borer.

Why Choose Blackbutt Joinery Hardwood
Pale, Contemporary Look
Blackbutt’s golden-to-pale-brown colour and straight, even grain give joinery a clean, light, modern appearance that suits today’s interiors and finishes to a bright, natural look.
Hard and Hard-Wearing
With a Janka hardness around 9 kN, Blackbutt strongly resists dents and surface wear, making it ideal for benchtops, tabletops, stair treads and cabinetry that sees daily use.
Stable and Reliable
Well-seasoned Blackbutt behaves predictably in service, helping doors, drawers, panels and tops stay true — a key quality for fine joinery.
Machines and Finishes Well
Blackbutt cuts and finishes cleanly and takes oils, stains and clear coatings nicely; its density rewards sharp tooling and pre-drilling for crisp joints.
Not Lyctid-Susceptible
Unlike some hardwoods, Blackbutt’s heartwood is not susceptible to lyctid borer — a practical advantage for long-lasting joinery.
Versatile Across the Home
From furniture and cabinetry to stairs, doors and mouldings, Blackbutt lets you carry one consistent, contemporary timber through an entire interior.

Grades, Selection & Movement
Blackbutt can be supplied in different grades to suit the look you are after — cleaner, lower-feature selections for a calm, uniform appearance, or character grades that showcase the natural colour variation, grain and markings that make the timber distinctive. Because timber is a natural product, every board is unique, so for visible work it pays to lay boards out and select and arrange them for colour and grain before machining, composing the piece so that tops, doors and panels read the way you intend. We can supply to your preferred grade and, where possible, provide a sample so you know what to expect. Timber movement is the other key consideration in joinery. Blackbutt should be allowed to acclimatise to the conditions of the room or workshop where it will live before it is machined and assembled, so that it reaches a stable moisture content first. Design and detail joints, frames and panels to accommodate the small seasonal movement that all solid timber undergoes, and finish all faces and edges — including undersides and backs — so moisture is taken up and released evenly and components stay flat and true. These simple habits are the difference between joinery that lasts and joinery that twists or splits. Finally, store and handle Blackbutt well before and during the build. Keep boards flat, evenly supported and off the floor in a dry, well-ventilated space out of direct sun, and protect machined components and finished surfaces from knocks and moisture until installation. A little care in storage keeps the timber straight and the finished joinery looking its best.

Working With and Finishing Blackbutt
Blackbutt is dense, so let it acclimatise, work with sharp tooling and pre-drill near board ends and edges to prevent splitting. It glues and assembles well with standard joinery practice; choose adhesives suited to dense hardwoods and keep cutting edges sharp for clean joints and crisp profiles. Blackbutt finishes to a bright, natural look and takes oils, stains and clear coatings evenly. For interior joinery, a quality clear or tinted finish protects the surface and showcases the pale grain; finish all faces and edges to balance moisture movement and keep tops, doors and panels stable. For exterior joinery, use a durable, maintained exterior coating.
