Wormy Chestnut Cladding
For cladding and lining with genuine, rustic personality, nothing beats Wormy Chestnut. Supplied by JVS Timber, Wormy Chestnut is a feature-grade blend of southern eucalypts celebrated for its natural markings — deep red gum veins, squiggly worm trails, pinholes and ambrosia-beetle marks — set against warm tones from blonde straw to rich chocolate. No two boards are alike, making it the go-to timber for designers and homeowners who want a wall full of character and story. Whether you are creating a feature wall, a ceiling, a cafe or retail fit-out, or a protected external feature, Wormy Chestnut delivers warmth and individuality in abundance. Rustic Character with a Story in Every Board
Wormy Chestnut is a feature-grade trade name for a blend of southern-eastern Australian eucalypts — predominantly Eucalyptus obliqua, Eucalyptus sieberi and Eucalyptus fastigata, much of it from Victoria’s East Gippsland region. It is the same timber family sold in cleaner select grade as Australian Chestnut, but here it is chosen specifically to celebrate the marks of a hard life in the forest: deep red gum veins formed by fire, ambrosia-beetle and worm markings, pinholes and squiggly trails. Colours range from blonde and straw browns through to rich chocolate, giving Wormy Chestnut its warm, layered, characterful appearance. With a Janka hardness around 8.0 to 8.1 kN and a density near 800 kg/m³, Wormy Chestnut is a hard, hard-wearing timber that machines and finishes well. Its natural durability is moderate (around Class 3), so it is at its best as internal lining and feature walls, or as external cladding only where it is well protected, coated and maintained. Because its character is the point, Wormy Chestnut is supplied without separating out the natural features — they are exactly what makes it special.

Why Choose Wormy Chestnut Cladding
Unmatched Rustic Character
Deep red gum veins, worm and beetle markings, pinholes and squiggly trails make every Wormy Chestnut board unique — a feature wall full of natural story and warmth that mass-produced materials cannot replicate.
Warm, Layered Colour
Tones from blonde and straw browns to rich chocolate give Wormy Chestnut a warm, inviting, layered palette that suits relaxed, contemporary and characterful interiors.
Hard and Hard-Wearing
With a Janka hardness around 8 kN, Wormy Chestnut resists knocks and surface wear, helping feature walls and lining keep their appearance over time.
Machines and Finishes Well
It works, sands and finishes readily and takes coatings and stains nicely, so the natural markings can be showcased with a smooth, refined surface.
Popular in Hospitality and Retail
Its instant character and warmth make Wormy Chestnut a favourite for cafes, restaurants, shops and feature areas where atmosphere matters.
Coordinates with Australian Chestnut
Because it shares the same timber family as select-grade Australian Chestnut, you can pair calm and characterful surfaces across a design while keeping a coherent palette.

Wormy Chestnut Cladding Profiles & Grades
Wormy Chestnut cladding can be supplied in a choice of popular profiles to suit the look you are after — from crisp shiplap and tongue-and-groove boards that create clean, contemporary shadowlines, through splayed weatherboard and board-on-board profiles for a more traditional feel, to square-edge and channel profiles for a modern, linear aesthetic. Cover width has a big impact on the finished look: narrower boards read as fine and detailed, while wider boards give a bolder, more streamlined facade. Our team can talk through the options and help you choose the profile and width that best suit your design and budget. Grade is the other key choice. Cleaner, lower-feature grades give a calm, uniform appearance, while character or feature grades showcase the natural colour variation, grain and markings that make Wormy Chestnut distinctive. Because timber is a natural product, every board is unique, so we recommend reviewing a current sample or batch before committing to a large order. Tell us the profile, width and grade you are leaning towards and we will confirm what is available and provide samples where possible.

Working With and Maintaining Wormy Chestnut
Wormy Chestnut machines and fixes readily with standard hardwood practice; pre-drill near board ends and use quality fixings. For internal lining, fix to battens or a suitable framework and finish with a quality clear or tinted interior coating, which both protects the surface and deepens the natural markings and gum-vein colour beautifully. Because its natural durability is moderate (around Class 3), Wormy Chestnut is best used internally or in well-protected external locations. Where used outside, it must be fully coated on all faces and edges, detailed to shed water, kept off the ground and maintained with periodic recoating; always seal cut ends. For fully exposed cladding, choose a Class 1 or Class 2 species instead.
