Messmate Cladding
Messmate is one of Australia’s best-loved character hardwoods — a warm, honey-toned eucalypt rich in natural detail, with gum veins and subtle colour shifts that give every board its own personality. Supplied by JVS Timber, Messmate cladding and lining brings genuine warmth and texture to interiors and protected feature walls, making it a favourite for designers chasing a relaxed, natural, distinctly Australian look. Whether you are lining a living area, a ceiling or a protected external feature, Messmate adds character that mass-produced materials cannot match. Warm, Characterful and Full of Natural Detail
Messmate (Eucalyptus obliqua) grows across Tasmania, Victoria and the tablelands of New South Wales and southern Queensland, and is one of the eucalypts also sold within the Tasmanian Oak group. Its heartwood ranges from pale browns and light yellows to warm honey tones, sometimes with a subtle peach hue, with a pale sapwood that is not always distinct. An even, moderately coarse texture, a generally straight (sometimes interlocked) grain, defined growth rings and common gum veins combine to give Messmate its warm, characterful appearance. Messmate is moderately hard, with a Janka hardness around 7.1 kN and a density near 780 kg/m³, and machines and finishes well. Its natural durability is lower (around Class 3), so it is at its best as internal lining and feature walls, or as external cladding only where it is well protected, coated and maintained. It should be specified with appropriate borer treatment where required. Used in the right place, Messmate rewards with a warmth and individuality that few timbers match.

Why Choose Messmate Cladding
Warm Honey Tones
Messmate’s pale-brown to honey colouring, sometimes with a peach hue, creates a relaxed, inviting, distinctly Australian look that works beautifully in contemporary and coastal interiors.
Rich Natural Character
Defined growth rings, gum veins and subtle colour variation give every Messmate board individuality — a genuine point of difference for feature walls and lining.
Machines and Finishes Well
Messmate works, sands and finishes readily and takes coatings and stains nicely, making it easy to achieve a smooth, refined surface for interior lining and joinery.
Moderately Hard and Stable
With a Janka hardness around 7 kN, Messmate is hard enough for everyday interior surfaces while remaining straightforward to handle and install.
Versatile Feature Timber
Ideal for internal feature walls, ceiling lining and protected external features, Messmate is a flexible way to add warmth and texture across a project.
Part of a Coordinated Palette
As a member of the ash/Tasmanian Oak eucalypt group, Messmate coordinates naturally with related species for a cohesive timber scheme.

Messmate Cladding Profiles & Grades
Messmate cladding can be supplied in a choice of popular profiles to suit the look you are after — from crisp shiplap and tongue-and-groove boards that create clean, contemporary shadowlines, through splayed weatherboard and board-on-board profiles for a more traditional feel, to square-edge and channel profiles for a modern, linear aesthetic. Cover width has a big impact on the finished look: narrower boards read as fine and detailed, while wider boards give a bolder, more streamlined facade. Our team can talk through the options and help you choose the profile and width that best suit your design and budget. Grade is the other key choice. Cleaner, lower-feature grades give a calm, uniform appearance, while character or feature grades showcase the natural colour variation, grain and markings that make Messmate distinctive. Because timber is a natural product, every board is unique, so we recommend reviewing a current sample or batch before committing to a large order. Tell us the profile, width and grade you are leaning towards and we will confirm what is available and provide samples where possible.

Working With and Maintaining Messmate
Messmate is straightforward to work with standard hardwood practice; pre-drill near board ends and use quality fixings. For internal lining, fix to battens or a suitable framework and finish with a quality clear or tinted interior coating to protect the surface and bring out the grain and gum-vein character. Because its natural durability is lower (around Class 3), Messmate is best used internally or in well-protected external locations. Where used outside, it must be fully coated on all faces and edges, detailed to shed water, kept off the ground and maintained with periodic recoating; always seal cut ends. For fully exposed cladding, choose a Class 1 or Class 2 species instead.

Messmate (Eucalyptus obliqua) is one of the three eucalypts blended and sold as Tasmanian Oak. When you specify Messmate on its own you get that single species, with its characteristic honey tones, growth rings and gum veins, rather than a blend.

Defined growth rings, common gum veins and subtle colour variation from pale brown to honey (sometimes with a peach hue) give Messmate its warm, individual character — no two boards are quite the same.
