Australian Chestnut Cladding
For a warm, sophisticated timber look without busy, rustic markings, Australian Chestnut is an elegant choice. Supplied by JVS Timber, Australian Chestnut is a select-grade blend of southern eucalypts in soft, even tones of neutral brown to light chocolate, with only subtle natural variation. It is the cleaner, more uniform sibling of Wormy Chestnut — same timber family, but selected for a calm, contemporary appearance that suits refined feature walls, lining and protected cladding. Whether you are creating an internal feature wall, a ceiling lining or a sheltered external feature, Australian Chestnut brings understated warmth and natural beauty. Warm, Even Tones with Subtle Character
Australian Chestnut is a trade name for a blend of southern-eastern Australian eucalypts — commonly Eucalyptus obliqua, Eucalyptus sieberi and Eucalyptus fastigata — selected and graded for consistency. In select grade, the timber presents a calm palette of mellow straw-brown to light chocolate tones with only slight colour variation and minimal feature, giving cladding and lining a sophisticated, low-fuss appearance. (The same blend, selected instead for its natural markings, is sold as feature-grade Wormy Chestnut.) With a Janka hardness around 8.0 to 8.1 kN and a density near 800 kg/m³, Australian Chestnut is a hard, hard-wearing timber that machines and finishes well. Its natural durability is moderate — around Class 3 above ground — so it is at its best as internal lining and feature walls, or as external cladding only where it is well protected, coated and maintained. Like most ash-group eucalypts, it should be specified with appropriate borer treatment where required.

Why Choose Australian Chestnut Cladding
Clean, Sophisticated Appearance
Select-grade Australian Chestnut offers warm, even neutral-brown to light-chocolate tones with only subtle variation — a calm, contemporary look ideal where rustic feature markings are not wanted.
Hard and Hard-Wearing
With a Janka hardness around 8 kN, Australian Chestnut resists knocks and surface wear, helping feature walls and lining keep their appearance over time.
Machines and Finishes Beautifully
This blend works, sands and finishes well, taking coatings and stains evenly — ideal for crisp, refined internal lining and joinery-quality detailing.
Warm, Natural Character
Even in select grade, Australian Chestnut retains the warmth and subtle grain of a natural eucalypt, adding genuine timber character to interiors.
Versatile Feature Timber
Equally suited to feature walls, ceiling lining and protected external features, it is a flexible choice for adding warmth across a project.
Pairs with Wormy Chestnut
Because it shares the same timber family as feature-grade Wormy Chestnut, you can mix calm and characterful surfaces across a design while keeping a coherent palette.

Australian Chestnut Cladding Profiles & Grades
Australian Chestnut cladding can be supplied in a choice of popular profiles to suit the look you are after — from crisp shiplap and tongue-and-groove boards that create clean, contemporary shadowlines, through splayed weatherboard and board-on-board profiles for a more traditional feel, to square-edge and channel profiles for a modern, linear aesthetic. Cover width has a big impact on the finished look: narrower boards read as fine and detailed, while wider boards give a bolder, more streamlined facade. Our team can talk through the options and help you choose the profile and width that best suit your design and budget. Grade is the other key choice. Cleaner, lower-feature grades give a calm, uniform appearance, while character or feature grades showcase the natural colour variation, grain and markings that make Australian Chestnut distinctive. Because timber is a natural product, every board is unique, so we recommend reviewing a current sample or batch before committing to a large order. Tell us the profile, width and grade you are leaning towards and we will confirm what is available and provide samples where possible.

Working With and Maintaining Australian Chestnut
Australian Chestnut machines and fixes readily with standard hardwood practice; pre-drill near board ends to avoid splitting and use quality fixings. For internal lining, fix to battens or a suitable framework and finish with a quality clear or tinted interior coating to protect the surface and showcase the grain. Because its natural durability is moderate (around Class 3), Australian Chestnut is best used internally or in well-protected external locations. Where used outside, it must be thoroughly coated on all faces and edges, detailed to shed water, kept off the ground, and maintained with periodic recoating. Always seal cut ends. For fully exposed cladding, a Class 1 or Class 2 species is the more robust choice.
