Spotted Gum Cladding
When a facade needs to make a statement, few timbers do it like Spotted Gum. Supplied by JVS Timber, Spotted Gum is one of Australia’s most beautiful and hardest-wearing hardwoods — a dense, richly coloured eucalypt with a wavy, characterful grain that ranges from pale honey through warm browns to deep chocolate. Combined with Class 1 durability and a BAL-29 bushfire rating, those looks make Spotted Gum a premium choice for architectural cladding that has to perform as good as it looks. Whether you are cladding a feature facade, a commercial frontage, a coastal home or a dramatic internal wall, Spotted Gum delivers depth of colour, striking figure and decades of service. Rich Colour, Striking Grain, Serious Durability
Spotted Gum (Corymbia maculata and related species) grows along the east coast of Australia from Victoria through New South Wales into Queensland. Its heartwood spans an unusually wide and attractive palette — pale greyish-honey, warm mid-browns, reddish tones and deep chocolate — often within the same project, giving Spotted Gum cladding a lively, layered appearance. The grain is frequently wavy and interlocked, producing the prized 'fiddleback' figure sought by architects and designers, with a moderately coarse, even texture. Beyond its looks, Spotted Gum is a genuine performer. With a Janka hardness around 11 kN and a density of roughly 950 to 1,010 kg/m³, it is one of the harder commercial hardwoods, rated Class 1 for above-ground durability and commonly approved for use up to BAL-29 in bushfire-prone areas. A useful practical bonus for cladding is its relatively low tannin leaching, which makes it a sensible choice over light-coloured substrates where staining from run-off is a concern. Note that the sapwood is susceptible to lyctid borer and should be specified accordingly.

Why Choose Spotted Gum Cladding
Striking, Varied Colour and Figure
Spotted Gum’s palette spans honey, warm brown, red and chocolate tones, often with a wavy 'fiddleback' grain. It is one of the most visually impactful cladding timbers available and a genuine architectural feature.
Class 1 Above-Ground Durability
Rated Durability Class 1 above ground on the AS 5604 scale, Spotted Gum’s dense, decay-resistant heartwood is ideally suited to exposed external cladding and long service life in Australian conditions.
Exceptionally Hard and Hard-Wearing
With a Janka hardness around 11 kN, Spotted Gum strongly resists knocks, dents and surface wear — valuable for cladding at accessible levels and in demanding commercial settings.
BAL-29 Bushfire Performance
Spotted Gum is one of the recognised bushfire-resisting timbers under AS 3959 and is commonly approved for use up to BAL-29, suiting it to cladding in many bushfire-prone areas (confirm per site).
Low Tannin Leaching
Compared with some hardwoods, Spotted Gum leaches relatively little tannin, making it a smart choice for cladding installed over or beside light-coloured render and substrates where run-off staining matters.
Premium, Timeless Appeal
Spotted Gum is a premium timber whose depth of colour and figure age beautifully — a cladding that lends a building lasting character and stand-out kerb appeal.

Spotted Gum Cladding Profiles & Grades
Spotted Gum cladding can be supplied in a choice of popular profiles to suit the look you are after — from crisp shiplap and tongue-and-groove boards that create clean, contemporary shadowlines, through splayed weatherboard and board-on-board profiles for a more traditional feel, to square-edge and channel profiles for a modern, linear aesthetic. Cover width has a big impact on the finished look: narrower boards read as fine and detailed, while wider boards give a bolder, more streamlined facade. Our team can talk through the options and help you choose the profile and width that best suit your design and budget. Grade is the other key choice. Cleaner, lower-feature grades give a calm, uniform appearance, while character or feature grades showcase the natural colour variation, grain and markings that make Spotted Gum distinctive. Because timber is a natural product, every board is unique, so we recommend reviewing a current sample or batch before committing to a large order. Tell us the profile, width and grade you are leaning towards and we will confirm what is available and provide samples where possible.

Working With and Maintaining Spotted Gum
Spotted Gum is very dense, so pre-drilling near board ends is essential to prevent splitting, and quality fixings (304/316 stainless near the coast) should be used; keep tooling sharp. Fix cladding over battens with a drained, ventilated cavity, detail the work to shed water, and seal cut ends. Where a bushfire rating applies, follow AS 3959 requirements. Specify heartwood, or treated sapwood, given the sapwood’s lyctid susceptibility. To preserve Spotted Gum’s rich colour and figure, finish with a quality exterior coating or oil and re-apply periodically depending on exposure; UV-stabilised coatings help hold the colour. Left uncoated, it weathers to a silver-grey while keeping its durability. Its low tannin leaching reduces the risk of run-off staining onto adjacent light surfaces, but good detailing and ventilation remain important for maximising service life.

Spotted Gum has an unusually broad colour range — honey, brown, red and chocolate tones — often within the same project, combined with a wavy, interlocked 'fiddleback' grain. The result is a lively, layered facade with real depth and character.
Yes — Spotted Gum is a recognised bushfire-resisting timber under AS 3959 and is commonly approved for use up to BAL-29. Always confirm the specific BAL requirement and detailing for your site.
Spotted Gum leaches relatively little tannin compared with some hardwoods, which makes it a safer choice over light substrates. Good detailing to shed water away from light surfaces is still recommended, especially during the first wettings.
Very hard — with a Janka rating around 11 kN it is one of the harder commercial hardwoods, strongly resisting knocks and surface wear. This density means pre-drilling and sharp tooling are needed during installation.
To keep its rich colour, apply a quality exterior, ideally UV-stabilised, coating or oil and re-apply periodically. Left uncoated it weathers to silver-grey without losing durability — the choice is aesthetic.
