Working With and Maintaining Silvertop Ash
Silvertop Ash is one of the more cooperative hardwoods to install. Standard hardwood decking practice applies — fix with quality decking screws (stainless steel recommended near the coast), maintain consistent board gaps for drainage and ventilation, and ensure good airflow beneath the deck. Pre-drilling near board ends helps avoid splitting. Because the species can carry natural gum veins and surface features, set boards aside and select faces during installation for the look you want. To maintain the light tones and protect the surface, apply a quality penetrating decking oil after installation and reapply once or twice a year depending on exposure and traffic. Left uncoated, Silvertop Ash will weather to a silvery grey. For above-ground decking the timber performs well without preservative treatment, but any boards used in or near ground contact, or in constantly wet locations, should be treated to extend their service life. Always reseal cut ends.
